How to: Look Better in Photographs

For the Mumm exhibit, I was asked to shoot a self portrait for the catalog and the exhibit wall.  As the subject of a portrait, it seemed only fitting to include tips on how all of us can look better in photographs.
Here is my self portrait, taken while listening on the computer to Terry Gross’s interview with Jon Stewart.  I listened to the funny, engaging interview to amuse myself and to encourage expression in my face.
Ten tips:
1.  Keep your eyes engaged.  Don’t have a flat expression.  If the photographer doesn’t engage you, think about something you really like.
2.  Turn your hips so they’re at an angle to the camera.  Trust me on this one.
3.  Move around – don’t get stiff.  Be natural.
4.  Fall in love with the camera and the camera will love (like?) you back.  Choose to enjoy being photographed.
5.  Hold your head naturally.
6.  Do NOT say cheese.
7.  Place one of your legs to the back, and shift your weight.
8.  Relax your hands and neck.  Take the tension out.
9.  Find a comfortable position for your hands.
10.  Feel free to look away from the camera.
Resistance is futile.  Give in and enjoy being photographed!

NVYSO at the River Festival

The River Festival concert was fabulous last night, and a great experience for the Youth Symphony kids to play with the Napa Valley Symphony. The security was more lax after the intermission, so no scary guys yelled at me as I set up my tripod on the side by the expensive seats.

As usual, I took several photos, but this is my favorite – Ray Manzarek (Doors keyboardist) and the pretend Jim Morrison with fists raised.  (The pretends Jim Morrison was a leap!)

Erin + Dave

How to talk about these two … Erin is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Navy.  She just got back from Haiti and was previously stationed on a ship off the coast of Iraq.  Dave is an Army Major.  He just left for a tour of duty in Iraq.  Both are linguists and met at the Monterey Language Institute.

These two are amazing, salt of the earth, kind people who delight in each other and know what is important in life.  What a privilege to meet them, and an honor to photograph their wedding.

Pashmina

Kelly gave all the women at her wedding these orangey and lavender pashminas.  The colors worked perfectly with her flowers and decor.  See what a little twirling encouragement can produce?  Fun!

Kelly + Najib

Site and Caterer:  Auberge du Soleil

Coordinator:  Layla Azimi

Hair and Make up:  Jenn at Details with Dixie

Flower:  Susan Carr, Artiste Fleuriste

DJ:  Will, AMS Entertainment

Kelly and Najib were referred to me by a couple I adore, Chris and Kristina.  (Who, by the way, have a new baby.)  By coincidence, these East Coasters and friends both happened to be attracted to Napa Valley for their weddings.   With weddings two years apart, they both chose Auberge du Soleil.

Not surprising, Kelly and Najib are also sweeties.  Their friends and family came to Napa from all over the world to celebrate this wonderful event.  Loved the soccer women.  The men had great senses of humor.

Kelly gave pashminas to all the women in attendance.  I’ve posted those photos in a separate entry to show what a bit of twirling encouragement can produce.
